CARRIE'S SPECIALTIES

Services offered

Carrie is eager to work with your teachers to enhance their understanding and practice of balanced literacy. She is able to present when convenient for you.

Each workshop will provide participants with a deep understanding of the theory behind the approach, as well practical ideas for implementation.

The goal is for teachers to walk away with units, lessons, and strategies that they can implement in their classrooms immediately. The majority of the time is spent working, creating, planning, and reflecting.

If your school is already engaged in balanced literacy, Carrie can help you ensure that the structures in place at your school are maximizing teacher effectiveness and student learning.

Professional Staff Development

Carrie provides professional development tailored to your district and school needs. Large and small group offerings are available on a variety of topics relating to literacy such as implementing readers and writers workshop, phonics, conferring, small group instruction, guided reading, assessment, running records, book clubs, and grammar.  Carrie also provides modeling of lessons in the classroom in order for teachers to see best literacy practices in action.

Coaching

Carrie provides continued support for teachers by coaching them relating to mini lesson delivery, conferring, small group instruction and more. She observes teachers and then provides timely and actionable feedback to promote educator growth which in turn positively impacts student learning.

Lab Site Expertise

Carrie offers schools the opportunity to have administrators and teachers work alongside each other in an actual classroom, “the lab site”, to facilitate growth through demonstration and guided practice. Staff members will collaborate by planning and delivering mini lessons, conferring together in triads with students, and participating in debriefing sessions which will allow for reflection and future school planning.

Curriculum Development and Pacing Guides

Carrie can assist with creating comprehensive curriculum guides and pacing guides for your district or school that promote consistency and fidelity across grade levels.

Book Room and Classroom Library Development

Book rooms and well developed classroom libraries further the growth of readers and writers. Carrie’s extensive knowledge about children’s literature makes her a great resource when districts or schools want to develop current, relevant and engaging book rooms or classroom libraries.

KIND WORDS

About Carrie

As a veteran teacher, change becomes more challenging. Carrie was there to help me become proficient and confident in making this change to a new ELA curriculum. Years later, Carrie continues to offer her support.

5th Grade Teacher
Throughout this past year, I have had the opportunity to work with Carrie in order to further my learning with the Lucy Calkins writing curriculum. This learning experience has been incredibly beneficial for both the teachers and the students, and it truly allows all of who are involved to be lifelong learners. Carrie creates an environment where you feel comfortable to share your thoughts and ideas and ask questions.
Sarah N.
First Grade Teacher
Carrie is such a positive role model for me as well as for my second graders. They would look so forward to her visits and gentle suggestions. Carrie made us feel like we could do and accomplish anything. I really enjoyed the conferences that we would have together after I taught a lesson or she did.

There's no such thing as a kid who hates reading. There are kids who love reading, and kids who are reading the wrong books.
